Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but wait for what the Father had promised, “Which, He said, “you heard from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.’ Acts 1:4-6
What is very interesting is the definition of this word "baptized". As you look at the context of where a word is mentioned. The context will determine the definition.
Baptized defined:
• The word “baptized” baptizo, comes from bapto (meaning to dip) and is “to immerse, submerge, overwhelm, or saturate.”
• It is “the introduction or placing of a person or thing into a new environment or into union with something so as to alter its condition or relationship to its previous environment or condition.” It means to be identified with.
• Boice says, “The clearest example that shows the meaning of baptize is a text from the Greek poet, and physician Nicander, who lived about 200 B.C. It is a recipe for making pickles and is helpful because it uses both words. Nicander says that in order to make a pickle, the vegetable should first be ‘dipped’ (bapto) into boiling water and then ‘baptised’ (baptize) in the vinegar solution. Both verbs concern the immersing of vegetables in a solution. But the first is temporary. The second, the act of baptizing the vegetable, produces a permanent change.’ Bible Study Magazine, James Montgomery Boice, May 1989.
What's the difference in the Old Testament verses New Testament in regards to the Holy Spirit?
Old Testament we know that when we see the mention of the Holy Spirit as coming and going. The Holy Spirit did not permanently indwell a believer. Ezekiel 36:25-27 we see the promise of the Holy Spirit to come.
In Acts we see the transition of the Old Covenant to the New Covenant. The Holy Spirit has come to permanently indwell believers. The pickle definition confirms that it cannot be undone. What you see through the Epistles is that each letter is addressed to believers, alot on their "walk" "their behavior" "fruit of the spirit" etc. How to live in our Christian walk. Our Sanctification. How the Spirit works in the life of a believer.
The Term “baptism of the Holy Spirit is not used in the Word of God. However, there are six references in which the words “baptized with the Holy Spirit” are used.
A preposition precedes “Holy Spirit” in each of these verses. The preposition en is translated either “with”, “in” or “by”.
• Mark 3:11 “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire”
• Mark 1:8 “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit”
• Luke 3:16 “He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire”.
• John 1:33 “He upon whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining upon Him, this is the One who baptizes in the Holy Spirit”
Matt 28:18-20 “Although “baptized with the Holy Spirit” is not used in these verses, this is the other place in the gospels where both “baptizing and” and “Holy Spirit” are used together.
• And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. “Go, therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always even to the end of the ages.”
• I Corinthians 12:13 is the last passage in the Word of God that uses the words “baptized” and the “Holy Spirit”. The prepositional phrase en “by” can be translated “in,” “with”, or “by”.
o For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.
Jesus speaking to the Apostles:
Acts 1:8 “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be My witnesses both in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth.”
• We see the fulfillment of Acts 1:4-8 in Acts 2 on the day of Pentecost. Mystery of the church. Our identification into one body. No longer separated. Jesus tore down that barrier wall at the cross. Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek (Gentile).
o When? Day of Pentecost – Fifty days after Passover & Firstfruits.
o Who? Jew and Gentile into one body = beginning of the Church
o What? Baptized = identification into one body.
• Who? When? Acts 2 – Salvation to the Jews first. (However not all Jews believed)
• Who? When? Acts 8 – Salvation to the Samaritans – more later
• Who? When? Acts s10 – Salvation to the Gentiles – more later
Day of Pentecost has come, the Apostles who were told to wait in Jerusalem for the promise to come. You will be baptized (identified) with the Holy Spirit. When the Holy Spirit comes upon you, you will be My witnesses…. Permanent indwelling of the Holy Spirit. There was now a permanent change within. What was once not there is now living within each believer. We are about to hear Peter who once denied Jesus now witness about Him with great boldness. What must take place for this gift of the Holy Spirit to take place? Allowing scripture to interpret scripture, Ephesians 1:14-15 "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, Who is given as a pledge of our inheritance,....
According to scripture they were sealed with the Holy Spirit upon listening to the message of truth and believing they were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise (back to that promise in the Gospels).
The baptism of the Holy Spirit according to scripture takes place at salvation. The believer upon hearing and believing the gospel is baptized "identified" into the body of Jesus Christ. Acts is the beginning of the church what was a mystery is now being revealed to the 12 Apostles first and then Peter with boldness "declares the mighty acts of God" to others and many more were added to the church that day.

What genuine trust in God looks like.
I recently posted this on facebook but thought I would post it on blog.
Book of Job - genuine trust, worship God for who He is not what He does... who are we to try to figure out God. After 37 chapters of manly counsel God speaks "Then the Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind and "who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge?" Who God is determines what He does therefore we must trust Him w/out reservation.
As I continue to think of this.. look at what all Job suffered, murder of his servants, livestock, loss of the work of his hands, his possessions, death of children, act of God from heaven, his own personal sickness with boils, a foolish wife, much adversity, friends who try to blame it on Job.
At the beginning of the book we see Satan asksing permission from God (2x) to bring about this pain for what reasosn? surely Job will curse You God to Your face. Yet through it alll Job did not sin with his lips nor curse God.
God allowed, so the immedate cause was Satan but the ultimate cause was God. God had told Satan (interesting) that His servant Job was blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil.
At the end of the book you see Job's answer to God "I know that You can do all things, and that no purpose of Yours can be thwarted". End results: friends rebuked by God and the Lord blessed the latter days of Job more than his beginning.
Trust God no matter what.

The beauty of Pentecost
I title this post "The beauty of Pentecost" because of a recent study of the book of Acts. My attempt to expound on some truths taken from the book of Acts. This first one I will concentrate on the timing of Acts. Chapters 1 & 2 we see the birth of the church. Acts 1:4-5 Jesus is speaking to the disciples He tells them "not to leave Jerusalem but to wait for what the Father had promised "which, " He said, "you heard of from Me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." (10 days to exact). After Firstfruits, Jesus is with the disciples for 40 days; then He ascends to the Father. The Spirit comes 10 days later,(on Pentecost) after Jesus ascends to the Father. (My next blog I will focus on the "baptism with the Holy Spirit).
The books of Acts is what we call a bridge or transition from the Old Covenant to the New Covenant. The acts of the Holy Spirit. So therefore when you are reading the gospels you realize that during that time they (disciples, Jesus) were still under the Old Covenant. The New Covenant was not inaugurated until the Cross. So anytime you are reading anything from Old Testament and Gospels realize that the Holy Spirit had not yet come to indwelt believers. Under the Old Covenant when we see the mention of the Holy Spirit, especially say with King David. We see that the Holy Spirit came and went, Holy Spirit empowered someone for a particular task. The Holy Spirit did not indwell man as under the New Covenant. Remember King David after his sin with Bathsheba, praying in Psalms 51:11 "do not take Thy Holy Spirit from me". Under the New Covenant the Holy Spirit permanently indwells believers. Ephesians 1:13-14 "In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance with a view to the redemption of God's own possession to the praise of His glory." Not to say that we as believers cannot grieve the Holy Spirit by our sin. (That's a whole new topic).
The timing of the book of Acts was "Pentecost". To have a better understanding of the Feast, Leviticus 23 and Numbers 28 & 29 will give you Feasts and the requirements for keeping. Also some notes taken from a book called "The Holiness of God" by Dr. Allen Ross.
“FEAST OF ISRAEL”APPOINTED TIMES – mo-a-deem A holy calendar reminded the people that time, everything in time, nature, all belonged to God. Holy Calendar, Agricultural Festivals, Seasonal calendar taught people that God established times for re-creation. He set the pattern of the seasons with times for sowing and for harvesting, labor and rest. Established and maintained the people as community of believers. Coming together shaped the community. Preserved Israel’s heritage and identity. Gathering’s brought greater praise and glory to God. Festivals in the year charted the essential aspects of God’s redemptive work. Year by Year God’s saving acts were reenacted beginning in the spring with Passover – deliverance from bondage by blood of Lamb, followed by the purging of corruption for a life of purity, the celebration of a new life given to God and the guidance and instruction given to that life. At the end of the year came the summons to enter His presence, followed by the removal of all sin by full atonement and then finally entering the fulfillment of the promises with great joy.
PENTECOST OR FEAST OF WEEKS – SHAVUOT
Lev 23:15-21
3RD MO (SIVAN)“SHAVUOT” – FESTIVAL OF PENTECOST (50) Harvest produced bread 50 DAYS –7 Complete Sabbaths after First fruits
The First (barley)sheaf was brought to the sanctuary just after Passover. 49 days later the last cereal crop (wheat) ripened. Now the Israelites had to bring two loaves of bread made from fine flour and leaven. The only time leaven was used. This festival celebrated what the harvests produced, what the Lord had produced for them.
Beginning and end of the grain harvest
Feast of weeks commemorate the giving of the Law that took place shortly after Passover and exodus from Egypt.
15-22 main emphasis the dedication and thanksgiving of the people of God for the bounty that they had received. The expression of gratitude takes the tangible form of loaves of bread made from wheat. (also leaving the corners for poor). Grain, Wave (2 loaves of leavened bread)burnt, drink, sin, peace offerings Priest shall wave them with the bread of the First fruits for a wave offering with the Lamb. They are holy to the Lord.
FUTURE: PROMISE OF THE SPIRIT MYSTERY OF CHURCH; JEWS-GENTILES IN ONE BODY
BELIEFS: Shavuot – giving of the Torah on Shavuot redeemed us spiritually from our bondage to idolatry and immorality.
Typology Feast of Weeks: Acts 2
“When the day of Pentecost had fully come”
OT Feast celebrated the two loaves baked with leaven as firstfruits to the Lord. What the harvest had made possible from the firstfruits to the full grain harvest. In time the giving of the Law was associated with First fruits.
NT– Luke saw the church as fulfillment of what had come to be called Pentecost. Passover, the Feast of Unleavened Bread and Feast of Firstfruits all foreshadowed the redemptive work of Messiah and Pentecost was the natural extension of Christ’s work. Firstfruits eventually turned into two loaves of bread, Christ’s death and resurrection produced the body of Christ – believers who were gathered into the church on this day of Pentecost. Just as Pentecost commemorated the giving of the law to Israel at Sinai, the Lord chose this day to send His Spirit and unite the body of Christ. According to the New Covenant (Jer 31:31-34; Ez 36:24-32) the Spirit will write the law on the hearts of the believers. Just as the loaves of bread made with leaven were placed before the Lord, the believers, imperfect in many ways, were presented to the Lord. Here then, is what the firstfruits of the resurrected Christ produces, and they are in turn are the first fruits of the new creation (Eph 1:10)
One thing to remember Pentecost where the Law was written upon believers hearts by the Holy Spirit. Not all Jews came to believe in Jesus Christ and became part of the body of Christ. Therefore a day to come for future fulfillment for Jews. (Trumpets, Atonement, Booths)(studying Revelation will shed alot of light on this).
What I love about the loaves of bread, the ingredients can never be divided again. They are permanently mixed and baked together.
The mystery of the church, Jew and Gentile into one body. Paul himself said in Ephesians 3:9-10 who preached the gospel to the Gentiles, the "unfathomable riches of Christ, and to bring to light what is the administration of the mystery which for ages has been hidden in God who created all things; so that the manifold wisdom of God might now be made known through the church to the rulers and the authorities in the heavenly places. This was in according with the eternal purpose which He carried out in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Where does our Peace come from?
I titled my blog "Living Victoriously in the Word."
"How blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord, who observe His testimonies, who seek Him with all our heart, they walk in His ways, that our ways may be established to keep His statutes." Psalms 119:1-8.
Word of God being the plumbline as to how to measure life. Today with all of the choices in life, the many paths to follow yet without a compass which direction do we choose? God says the "Word should be a lamp to my feet and light to my path" (Psalms 119:105) this is our guide to life. The Psalmist loves the law why? because the Word gives us the ability to recognize truth from a lie. Discern good from evil. We are wiser than our enemies. It is not a burden we have to carry. It's a light so we don't have to fall down and hurt ourselves. It is not a yoke of bondage but gives us freedom and liberty because we choose to obey from the heart.
Small portions of the Psalmist prayer: God your hands made me and fashioned me; you give me understanding that I may learn Your commandments, may Your lovingkindness comforts me. Teach me, O Lord, the way of Your statutes. Incline my heart to Your testimonies. Establish Your word to Your servant as that which produces reverence for You. I will walk at liberty, for I seek Your precepts. From your precepts I get understanding therefore I hate every false way.
Wonderful truth and promise to victoriously living "those who love Your law have great peace and nothing cause them to stumble" (Psalms 119:165).
What I think is a key question because my flesh battles with my spirit in obedience, how do I attain that peace and that in my walk I do not stumble. Word says "The Word of God is a lamp and a light" so that I do not stumble and a wonderful promise that we have is in Ezekiel 36:25-27 "I will sprinkle clean water on you and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all idols, moreover I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. I will put MY Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be carefully to observe My ordinances". Now this is our Covenant keeping God who puts His Holy Spirit within me. When? "in Him you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of my salvation, having also believed, I was sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of my inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God's own possession, to the praise of His glory. (Ephesians 1:13-14)
One word that seems to be before me alot lately is the word "peace", it's amazing how through readings, blogs, newsletter, sermons etc. has been about peace lately or maybe God is speaking to me about walking in peace. How? Philippians chapter 4 has several verses about peace... being anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension will guard your heart and your minds in Christ Jesus... finally brethren (more attainment of peace & our walk) whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard, practice these things and the God of peace will be with you.
We realize that "peace" comes from God and not this world. Peace is a fruit of the Spirit, so therefore let us live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Because God has given us a heart of flesh and has written His law upon our hearts, He promises that He will cause us to "want to obey". It comes from a personal relationship with Him, we cannot attain peace any other way. He lights my path, I choose rather to walk in that path of obedience and therefore do not stumble in darkness.

Philippians chapter 4 has several verses about peace... being anxious for nothing but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God and the peace of God which surpasses all comprehension will guard your heart and your minds in Christ Jesus... finally brethren (more attainment of peace & our walk) whatever is true, honorable, right, pure, lovely, of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things. The things you have learned and received and heard, practice these things and the God of peace will be with you.
We realize that "peace" comes from God and not this world. Peace is a fruit of the Spirit, so therefore let us live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Because God has given us a heart of flesh and has written His law upon our hearts, He promises that He will cause us to "want to obey". It comes from a personal relationship with Him, we cannot attain peace any other way. He lights my path, I choose rather to walk in that path of obedience and therefore do not stumble in darkness.
John 8:12 Jesus spoke to them saying, "I am the light of the world, he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness but will have the light of life."
